Children benefit from a variety of regular group experiences at Circle of Friends. These planned parts of the day include small-group time, large-group time, and transition times.
Group times are an opportunity to introduce new materials, activities, and conceptsSmall- and large-group times for preschoolers each generally last about 15 minutes. During these times, adults introduce children to new materials, ideas, and activities, which the children can then continue to explore at work time. Group times also offer social opportunities to all children. Group times grow from children's interests as well as the curriculum's content areas.
Our teachers put thought and effort into planning group times. They use their daily observations to see what children are interested in and how they can further their explorations in these areas. Group times are also the parts of the day when learning that needs to be systematic and sequenced — such as specific skills and concepts in literacy or mathematics — can be guaranteed for all children. However, even when a group activity is planned around specific concepts, teachers give children opportunities to take initiative and make choices.
We work together with the children in our care, supporting children's play, using encouragement instead of praise, and taking a problem-solving approach to conflict. Teaching them how to strategize.
Our classrooms are divided into several different areas designed for specific types of play, for example, dramatic play area , art center, block area, manipulative toys , math & science centers, computers & a reading loft.
We offer a balanced variety of experiences and learning opportunities. Children engage in both individual and social play, participate in small- and large- group activities, assist with cleanup skills, socialize during meals, develop self-help/care skills, and exercise both their small and large muscle groups. A daily routine is the key to the consistency & success of our program. .
